When to book a maternity session

One of the questions I hear most often from expecting moms is when to schedule maternity photos. The timing can make such a difference in how you feel during your session. Here are a few of my recommendations for choosing the best time to document this special season.

1) When should you book a maternity photographer?

I recommend looking for a maternity photographer once you enter your second trimester. This is also a great time to reserve your newborn session.

While last-minute sessions may be available, they are not always guaranteed. This is especially true during busy seasons. Booking early gives you plenty of time to plan your session and ensures there is room on your photographer’s calendar.

2) When should you schedule your maternity session?

I recommend scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 32 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully defined, but you are often still comfortable enough to enjoy your session.

This timing also gives us a little flexibility before those final weeks when you may feel more tired and ready to meet your baby!

3) Can you still take maternity photos beyond the recommended time frame?

Absolutely! I photograph many moms beyond the 28–32 week window. Sometimes they decide later in pregnancy that they want to preserve this season. Other times, especially with first-time moms, they simply want to wait until their bump is more noticeable.

The most important thing is choosing a time that feels right for you. If that falls outside the recommended window, that is perfectly okay!
